Bodywork professionals cannot be ignorant to the impacts of sexual violence, psychological trauma, or physical abuse.
Over half of all women in the US have been sexually assaulted - and that is a conservative statistic (see the CDC stats here). It wasn’t until 1994 that it became illegal to rape your spouse in the US. Rates of sexually violence against men and boys remains vastly under reported due to stigma and social misunderstanding about what constitutes sexual violence.
Racial and ethnic minorities in the US are far more likely to be caused bodily harm, including sexual violence.
Bodily autonomy for gender queer folks and women is under constant legal threat in this country and others across the globe.

We need bodyworker practitioners who can be with a person’s nervous system, not just their tissue. We need practitioners who don’t just treat clients and patients, we need them to care for people
Every single piece of Embodied works curriculum is built to do this. Every single lesson was designed with the understanding that the person who shows up for a session with you is statistically likely to have experienced sexual violence, or another form of abuse, or be intimately impacted by abuse experienced by a loved one.
It’s not just about skilled touch. It’s about respectful dialogue, honoring a person’s reality, staying in scope of practice and with skilled boundaries while being a genuine human around another human.
what you actually need to know to run a massage therapy practice
